Waddington’s is one of Leeds best known firms. This talk will tell the story of a plan hatched by the firm and the secret service in 1941.
About this Event

This event explores one of the most colourful episodes in the history of Waddington’s, the famous Leeds printing firm that brought Monopoly to Britain. Dr Henry Irving (a historian at Leeds Beckett University) will explain how the firm worked with British Military Intelligence to smuggle hidden escape kits into Prisoner of War camps.

The event will include a display of related items from the Leeds Museum collection, including a 1940s Monopoly set and silk maps produced by Waddington’s. You will have the opportunity to explore these items in the company of Kitty Ross (the Curator of Leeds History and Social History).

This event has been jointly organised by Leeds Beckett University, Leeds Museums and Galleries and the Leeds Civic Trust. Booking is preferred, although some seats may be available on the day.
