This fun art workshop involves looking for animal shapes in found twigs.
Much of the value of the workshop is gained through the process of learning to look differently at the world by choosing a random twig and finding an animal shape within. The workshop involves choosing a twig from among those provided and looking at it carefully from all angles, rejecting the obvious and searching for interesting shapes. Mikaela restricts the participants to using the found object without adding extra twig legs or trying to make the piece too obvious.
Once the twig has been selected, some time must be spent deciding which bits to keep and which pieces to trim to further emphasise the animal shape and ideally to allow it to stand up. The addition of a small sculptural element such as a head or a tail to the piece helps to emphasise the shape without defining the piece too much or obscuring too much of the twig. The head or other elements can be made with aluminium foil wrapped and tamped down until it is solid, and shaped appropriately and with added elements like ears, horns etc. Then the foil is covered with small pieces of cut masking tape.
