Are we treating half a person’s lifespan without adequate training?
What clinicians need to understand about menopause, hormones, and mental health.
Ms Kirstin Bouse (All About Her – The Centre for Menopause) will present this 2 hour masterclass.
Ever wondered why your 40 odd year-old client hasn’t responded to antidepressants and/or your usual treatment approach?
Despite the importance of integrating a lifespan / developmental lens to our work with clients, menopause is not covered in any mental health training. However any person born with ovaries who lives beyond their late 30's / early 40’s will at the very least begin perimenopause and should they live beyond approximately 51 years of age (the average age the Australian woman reaches menopause) they will also reach menopause and immediately begin their post-menopausal years which will continue for the remainder of their lives. With the average age of mortality for women being 81 years, those who live that long will navigate these menopausal years for half their life.
Without understanding general information about the menopausal transition, let alone the psychological impacts, mental health practitioners are not fully equipped to formulate and treat women in their late 30's plus. The lack of knowledge about this life stage and all that comes with it, at times may contribute to misdiagnosis and/or limited treatment success.
