Vuyani Dance Theatre proudly announces the 20th edition of Vuyani Week, its annual dance celebration dedicated to artistic excellence, mentorship, and youth development. This milestone event marks two decades of impact and innovation and culminates in a vibrant performance on 6 December 2025 at the Gibson Kente Theatre, Soweto Theatre.
Under the theme Elevate, this year’s program brings together the professional company—fresh from an international tour of Cion in France —and 80 young dancers from Vuyani’s Outreach Program.
The result is a dynamic, intergenerational showcase that celebrates growth, legacy, and the transformative power of movement.
The Outreach Program includes learners from Siyanqoba Afternoon Academy for Girls in Soweto, Orange Farm Primary School in Orange Farm, and Ennerdale Academy of Dance in Ennerdale. These young dancers have trained weekly under the guidance of Vuyani’s teaching artists, developing technical skill, expressive confidence, and choreographic insight. Their participation in Vuyani Week is a testament to the power of sustained investment in youth and the creative possibilities it unlocks.
This year’s celebration also highlights a special journey within the company. Zonke Nxumalo, now a trainee dancer with Vuyani Dance Theatre, was one of the first Outreach Program participants. His progression from student to aspiring full-time company member embodies the long-term impact of the program and the legacy it continues to build.
The 6 December performance program will include:
• The Convincer — choreographed by Tshepo Molusi
• Gister Maoba — choreographed by Otto Nhlapo
• Komati Aloe — a collaborative work by trainees and senior members Noko Moeketsi and Thabang Mdlalose
• I AM — a solo by Roseline Wilkens
• Outreach presentations by learners from Siyanqoba, Orange Farm, and Ennerdale
This is a family-friendly event that invites audiences of all ages to witness the convergence of professional artistry and emerging talent. It is a celebration of mentorship, resilience, and the joy of collective expression.
Patrons are encouraged to sponsor tickets for school-going youth, ensuring learners can attend and participate at no cost. Please note: Outreach Program performances are often sold out quickly — early booking is strongly advised.
Acknowledgements
The Outreach Program is made possible through the support of the Dakota Fine Bursary and Gregory Maqoma Industries Artists Fund. Vuyani Dance Theatre gratefully acknowledges the support of the National Arts Council (NAC), whose funding has made Vuyani Week possible. The company also extends heartfelt thanks to Soweto Theatre for its venue partnership and continued commitment to community-centred performance.
