When the pandemic first hit, Billy Brandt, Elaine Schoendorf, Kerry Gluckman and Raquel Salaysay unexpectedly found a silver lining during a dark time.The two couples and musical collaborators experienced a burst of creativity and formed Voxanna, a new acoustic folk-rock band from Metro Detroit.
“It’s something amazingly positive to do,” said Brandt, one of the band’s vocalists and a guitarist, banjoist and auto harpist. “It started with Kerry, Raquel and me - though I had met Elaine right before the pandemic. We trusted each other, and for some reason, we had an instinctual feeling that we’d be OK if we gathered to play music, so we did.”
“We had been working our thing concurrently with Kerry, Raquel and I working out this trio—this rhythm section thing,” Brandt said. “But we were missing one thing and that was three-part harmonies, so we eventually put it all Those lush harmonies ultimately inspired the band’s moniker and now serve as the cornerstone of Voxanna’s acoustic folk-rock sound
What resulted is a self-titled debut album filled with rich vocals and harmonies, acoustic neo-folk instrumentation flavored with elements of psych rock, jazz and world beats and compelling tales linked to personal and societal challenges.
Kate Hinote Trio
Kate Hinote is an award-nominated Detroit singer-songwriter performing predominantly original material she has co-written for her various projects, including the Kate Hinote Trio and Alt-Rock band, The Blueflowers, which she has been fronting for fifteen years. Hinote’s vocals are a mesmerizing blend of cinematic and operatic elements, creating an atmosphere suitable for intimate candle-lit lounges, late summer night fever dreams, or as a haunting torch song within a surreal soundtrack. Teaming up with guitarist David Johnson (The Blueflowers) and Matthew Parmenter (Discipline) on violin, The Kate Hinote Trio emerges as a contemporary and unique alt-folk ensemble, culminating in the release of their debut album, “Near,” in March 2021. In addition to touring throughout Michigan and into Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, the Trio is working towards the release of their second full-length album in 2024, which promises to establish the signature sound they have been passionately delivering at their live shows.
