Voulkos / Mishima
About this Event
Matthew Lutz-Kinoy in collaboration with Kazunori Hamana
Voulkos / Mishima:
A one-act ceramic play featuring Kazunori Hamana as Yukio Voulkos (a double of Yukio Mishima and Peter Voulkos) and Matthew Lutz-Kinoy as his studio assistant.
A play based on the theatrical workshops of renowned 20th century American ceramicist Peter Voulkos and the queer literature of Japanese playwright Yukio Mishima, the production invokes their radical propositions. Voulkos understood clay not as a peripheral craft medium, but as a material capable of reorganizing the relationships among abstraction, gesture, utility, and sculpture. Mishima, meanwhile, was interested in severe forms of self-fashioning through the body, performance, eroticism, violence, and death. At Amant, Lutz-Kinoy stages a dialogue between these historical figures, bridging his interest in fiction, biography, and ceramic traditions.
