VOS Festival 2024 - Festival Choir Open Call

Voices of Singapore Festival 2024 invites people living in Singapore to join us in our 2024 Festival Choirs for performances at the historic CHIJMES Hall from 2-5 September 2024. This year, we will present 4 Festival Choirs: Virtuosi Festival Choir, Children's Festival Choir, Silver Festival Choir and Community Festival Choir. About Virtuosi Festival Choir
The Festival Choir brings together musicians, choristers and conductors who has been an advocate to the music industry. We are excited to announce that Sanders Lau (Hong Kong), Artistic Director of the Hong Kong professional choir, NOĒMA, will be leading the 2024 Virtuosi Festival Choir, alongside with VOS conductor Mr. Chong Wai Lun.

Sanders Lau is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, United States, and is recognized as one of the most outstanding young choral conductors in Hong Kong. Additionally, he served as the conductor of the Teacher's Choir at the 2023 Hong Kong Inter-School Choral Festival.

The majority of artistic and score costs of this programme are sponsored and supported by VOS as part of the Voices of Singapore Festival Choral Leaders Initiative. Participation in a Festival Choir will be only $30 (before GST & platform fees) per singer. This fee is non-refundable.

Eligibility

• Minimum age of 18 years old
• Background as musicians, experienced choristers, music teachers, or conductors
• Proficient in sight-reading music with accurate pitching and rhythm
• Able to sing confidently and maintain strong harmony in 4 parts
• Capable of independently preparing music

Stage Dress Code

Ladies: formal full-length black attire with black covered shoes.
Men: black suit with white shirt and black bow tie, black covered shoes.

Performance With Scores

Scores are permitted for performance. No memory work is required.

About Children's Festival Choir
The Festival Choir brings together children from various schools and choirs who share a common passion for singing. Susanna Saw (Malaysia), the Director of the Young Choral Academy from Malaysia, will be leading the 2024 Children's Festival Choir for treble voices, alongside VOS Artistic Director, Dr. Darius Lim.

Susanna Saw is an active music educator promoting music and choral education in Malaysia. She obtained her Master in Music Education (Choral Focus) from Westminster Choir College, U.S.A. She currently holds the position of Vice-President in the International Kodály Society, the World Youth and Children Choral Artists’ Association, and the Malaysian Association for Music Education. She is also serves on the Advisory Board of CHORALSPACE, Germany.

Eligibility

Applicants must be between 8 and 16 years old, have at least 1 year of choral experience, and be able to sing in parts. Boys should be capable of singing in unchanged voices. Singers must be able to receive communications independently.

Stage Dress Code

Smart casual attire. Plain solid-coloured top (one colour, without any pattern) with dark-coloured bottom and black covered shoes.

Performance With Scores

Scores are permitted for performance. No memory work is required.

About Silver Festival choir
The Festival Choir brings together adults and senior citizens above 50 years old who share a common passion for singing. Dr. Pawasut Jodi Piriyapongrat (Thailand), Head of Choral Studies at the Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, will be leading the 2024 Silver Festival Choir alongside VOS conductor, Ms. Lim Jing Xiuan.

Jodi Pawasut Piriyapongrat earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with honors from Chulalongkorn University; and Master of Music in Church Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Music from the esteemed University of Southern California, where she studied choral conducting with Dr. William Dehning.

Aged 50 and above, with the ability to sing in tune. Some prior singing experience preferred. Due to venue limitations, singers will need to climb stairs up and down stage, as well as remain standing throughout the concert (60mins).

About Community Festival Choir
The Festival Choir brings together people from all walks of life who share a common passion in singing. Dr. Pawasut Jodi Piriyapongrat (Thailand), Head of Choral Studies at the Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, will be leading the 2024 Community Festival Choir alongside VOS conductor, Ms. Rebecca Reavley.
