Join us to improve habitat for the threatened South Bay burrowing owl population. This opportunity is for those aged 18+.
About this Event

It's still planting season! Together we will be working to improve habitat for the resident burrowing owl population by planting California native plants. The plants we are installing will attract this locally-threatened species' prey base (rodents and insects). Additional habitat restoration tasks include moving mulch with pitchforks and wheelbarrows and weeding with hand tools.

Activities involve digging holes with hand tools, bending, kneeling, and sitting on the ground. Volunteers will also walk on uneven terrain while carrying supplies.

Visit Grassroots Ecology’s Alviso Bufferlands webpage to learn more about the ecosystem and accessibility considerations.

Waivers/Registration: All volunteers attending the workday must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. This opportunity is only for those aged 18+.

Parking information: Navigate to 150 Nortech Pkwy, San Jose, CA 95134, the closest address to the project site. The site is not open to the public because it is sensitive habitat for burrowing owls. Access will be provided through the large metal gates at the end of the road - there will be a sign for the event. Park inside the gates of the project site along the unpaved road. View the parking map posted below. The gate will be locked at 9:45am; please arrive on time.

Meeting Space: We will meet inside the gate at the main project site, down the unpaved road. Grassroots Ecology staff will be present to welcome you.

Facilities: No bathrooms or running water are available at the project site.

Prepare for Working Outdoors:

  • Reusable water bottle (filled with water)
  • Snacks, if desired
  • Long pants, long sleeves recommended
  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes that can get dirty
  • Hat/sunscreen or rain gear/boots
  • Epi-Pen or allergy medicine, if applicable
  • Plan for potential exposure to sun, wind, ticks, prickly plants

We provide gloves, tools, and snacks!

Event Cancellations:

We are committed to the safety of our staff and volunteers. In the event that we must cancel a workday due to extreme weather conditions or poor air quality, a Grassroots Ecology staff person will reach out via email no later than 5:00 PM the day prior to this event.

Join Us!

Grassroots Ecology encourages people from all identities and backgrounds to participate in our programs. Many of our programs are outdoors and involve moving and working in a variety of landscapes. If you have accessibility concerns (e.g. allergies, limited mobility, learning differences), our projects are flexible and we are happy to work with you.
