Join us to improve habitat for the threatened South Bay burrowing owl population.
About this Event

Together we will be working to improve habitat for the resident burrowing owl population by removing invasive plants and watering native plants. By helping native plants thrive, we are attracting the owls' prey base (insects and rodents). Activities may involve digging with hand tools, bending, kneeling, carrying buckets of water and/or mulch, as well as walking on uneven terrain.

Visit Grassroots Ecology’s Alviso Bufferlands webpage to learn more about the ecosystem and accessibility considerations.

Waivers/Registration: All volunteers attending the workday must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. This opportunity is only for those aged 18+.

Parking information: Navigate to 150 Nortech Pkwy, San Jose, CA 95134, the closest address to the project site. There is not a public entrance to the site - volunteers may access via the large gate at the end of the road. There will be an event sign to direct you.

Pull through the gate and park along the gravel road.

Meeting Space: Walk down the gravel road to the restoration area. Grassroots Ecology staff will be present to welcome you. The gate will be locked at 9:15am; please arrive on time.

Facilities: No bathrooms or running water are available at the project site. The closest available restrooms are located at Top Golf and Target, a 5 minute drive away.

Prepare for Working Outdoors:

  • Reusable water bottle (filled with water)
  • Snacks, if desired
  • Long pants, long sleeves recommended
  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes that can get dirty
  • Hat/sunscreen or rain gear/boots
  • Epi-Pen or allergy medicine, if applicable
  • Plan for potential exposure to sun, wind, ticks, prickly plants

We provide gloves and tools.

Event Cancellations:

We are committed to the safety of our staff and volunteers. In the event that we must cancel a workday due to extreme weather conditions or poor air quality, a Grassroots Ecology staff person will reach out via email no later than 5:00 PM the day prior to this event.

Join Us!

Grassroots Ecology encourages people from all identities and backgrounds to participate in our programs. Many of our programs are outdoors and involve moving and working in a variety of landscapes. If you have accessibility concerns (e.g. allergies, limited mobility, learning differences), our projects are flexible and we are happy to work with you. Please reach out to the workday facilitator so we can prepare for your participation.
