Location
Alemany Farm | San Francisco, CA

About this Event
Getting your hands dirty helping to grow food is about as direct and rewarding as it gets. Join us on Friday, September 26th for an outdoors, in-person service-learning experience at San Francisco’s largest nonprofit food production site, Alemany Farm!
WHAT TO EXPECT:
We ask that volunteers come on-time, at the start of the shift. All volunteers will be required to sign a upon arrival, as we will work mostly on SF Rec & Parks land.
The day will start off with an introduction to the farm team and a tour of the farm! After the tour, the Alemany Farm team will lead us through various projects, such as weeding, planting, bed preparation, fruit tree work, compost making, mulching, pathway maintenance, greenhouse work, and more.
WHAT TO BRING:
- Face mask, optional
- Water Bottle
- Hat
- Sturdy Shoes
- Jacket with layered clothing underneath
- Sunscreen
- Snacks
- A bag (to bring home some produce)
**Travel light! The farm is an open public space and we have no secure storage for bags. Leave valuables at home and be mindful of your personal belongings, as you would in any park setting.
FAACTS will provide a light lunch and water to refill your water bottles.
ABOUT :
Friends of Alemany Farm grows food security and educates local residents about how they can become their own food producers. They strive to increase ecological knowledge and habitat value, and to sow the seeds for economic and environmental justice. All of the food they grow is given away for free to neighbors, volunteers, The Free Farm Stand, and other groups.
Alemany Farm pursues four main goals:
- Fostering Environmental Education by introducing children and adults to the idea that local food production can be part of a healthy ecosystem, and inspiring visitors to start their own gardens at home.
- Boosting food security by providing organic, healthy food to community members.
- Growing Leaders through the communal ethic of the barn-raising that encourages people to play an active role in decision-making.
- Promoting Ecological-Economic Development by using urban agriculture as a way to develop job skills.
ABOUT FAACTS:
The Food and Agriculture Action Coalition Toward Sovereignty (FAACTS) was formed in 2022 when 30 local partner organizations identified the necessity of ensuring consistent and equitable access to high quality, local, fresh and culturally-inclusive food and nutrition services in San Francisco. Over FAACTS’ history, they have always looked forward. With all the chaos trying to prevent us from joining forces to build collective power, they remain steadfast in their pursuit of a shared, positive, joyful vision of the future.
FAACTS' mission is to build a just, sustainable, and holistic food system, ensuring we are neighborhood-based and coordinated across every district in San Francisco, with the goal of nourishing our community in a way that is sincere, healthy, empowering, specific, culturally relevant, humble, and abundant.
DIRECTIONS TO ALEMANY FARM:
By BART: Glen Park is the closest BART station. It is a 15 minute walk or 5 minute bike to the farm. When exiting the station, cross Bosworth St, then turn right on Bosworth and follow it under the overpass. Bear left and follow Bosworth several blocks to Mission St. Cross Mission and head east on Murray St for 3 blocks until it ends at the entrance to Saint Mary’s Rec Center. Just inside the park entrance gate take an immediate right and follow the paved drive down the hill past the playground and the dog run, then bear left and down the walkway ramp to Alemany Blvd. The pedestrian gate to Alemany Farm is a few feet to the left.
Via bus from the Mission/Downtown SF: Take a 14 or 49 bus southbound on Mission Street to Bosworth Street (several blocks past 30th St). Cross Mission to Murray Street, then proceed along Murray and continue to the farm as described above.
You may search Google Maps for “Alemany Farm” to make your own route by bike, bus, or car.
PARKING:
There is a parking lot, although parking is somewhat scarce on-site so carpooling or drop-off is encouraged if you are planning on driving. The farm gate is easy to miss on the first time around - it is very shortly after the intersection of Alemany Blvd and Ellsworth. Look out for the Alemany Farm sign pictured on this event page!
