About this Event
How do we play with the mechanics of language on the page at the intersections of science and poetry? This is a class for all levels where we use our skills of observation about the natural and metaphysical world to invent new forms and exciting literature. We'll draw from a lineage of queer diasporic artists like George Abraham, Franny Choi, and Margaret Rhee. All you need to bring is something to write with!
Jireh Deng (they/them) is a queer Taiwanese / Hong Konger American poet and journalist born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. Their words appear in The Los Angeles Times, NPR, The Rumpus, Asian American Writers’ Workshop, and more. If they’re not writing, they’re probably at the boxing gym or cooking for friends. You can follow their work on Instagram and Twitter at @jireh_deng.
VoiceWaves is a Long Beach youth-led journalism and media-training project. The youth, ages 15–25, are learning to report, write, and create digital journalism content. Their stories raise awareness about community health issues and activate change in local neighborhoods.
If you are interested in getting trained and published with VoiceWaves, please contact the editor, Carlos Omar, at [email protected]
