Unlike other musical instruments, the human voice is the performer and the instrument. This has caused controversial decisions over the centuries on the topic of gender and voice. Today the voice is the only instrument that is still socially acceptable to refer to with gender. The term countertenor frequently refers to a cis gender male singing in a treble clef octave. Ranges of these countertenors vary, but we also have the term mezzo-soprano that primarily refers to a cis gender female singing in the same treble clef octave. However, with the welcoming of the trans community, the terms countertenor and mezzo-soprano get used sporadically without any logical explanation. Two Voices One Diva is a recital developed to challenge the idea that the vocal instrument has a gender. As a cis male, Taylor Mayne sings through a variety of tenor, castrati, and mezzo-soprano repertoire to argue the outdated concept of gendered voice types.
