About this Event
Vocal or Version presents Phill Jupitus (aka Porky The Poet).
PLEASE NOTE: Due to necessary travel arrangements, Phill will play from 9pm until 1030pm - so make sure you arrive early!
Being born in the early 1960s and subsequently spending his formative years in the 1970s placed Phill at a particularly fruitful point in the history of popular music. "The Beatles were probably the first band I was aware of. But at the same time my aunt was grooving to the contrasting sounds of Motown and Blue Beat."
Once the willfulness of the new wave had dispersed Phill was left with a bunch of much more interesting friends and started to hang out at Wendy May's Locomotion on a Friday night at The Town & Country Club in Kentish Town where he was bombarded with Ska, Two Tone, R&B, Motown, Stax and more!
Phill became a familiar face when he started as team captain on BBC Two’s pop quiz Never Mind the Buzzcocks in 1996, which went on to run for 19 years. Aside from live poetry and stand-up shows all over the UK, his numerous other TV credits include Live at the Apollo (BBC One) and QI (BBC Two).
As an actor, Phill starred as Baron Bomburst/Lord Scrumptious in the UK and Ireland tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang alongside Jason Manford in 2016 and in the same year, he played Bottom in the Bath Theatre Royal production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. His other stage roles include performances in: The Producers, Urinetown: The Musical, Hairspray, Spamalot, Big Society and Waiting for Alice.
