About this Event

SALLY CHIDLOW

Art and fashion historian, Sally Chidlow talking about legend of British fashion, the late VIVIENNE WESTWOOD - Saturday 4th February, 5pm - 6pm at The Heath Bookshop.

We are delighted to welcome back Sally Chidlow, art and fashion historian, for the second in her series of fashion talks.

SALLY CHILDLOW is an arts and fashion historian based in Moseley. She studied textiles and fashion at Winchester School of Art and the London College of Fashion. She went on to work for the iconoclastic Japanese designer Issey Miyake. She has worked at the Institute of Contemporary Art and Tate Liverpool in exhibitions education and was appointed Senior Lecturer in Fashion, Textiles and Visual Culture, a post she held for 22 years. Her academic work continues, researching the history of 1970s Glam fashion in the UK.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

A working class girl from Derbyshire who dropped out of fashion school, Vivienne Westwood has been a major figure in our fashion sights. Punk: New Romanticism ( a contemporary of Patti Bell) : Buffalo girls. A real legend of British fashion and an implacable force in the UK fashion industry and yet always left of field, and non-compromising: a real innovator among innovators; the queen of eccentrics, who will always be head and shoulders above her peers and have a permanent position in the very top echelons of her profession.

As though that’s not enough, additionally, Westwood’s protracted commitment to environmental action was acknowledged. She shifted her political attention to the climate catastrophe in the mid 2000s – stating that her interest in fashion had always been as a creator of social disorder. She was always at the vanguard of fighting for gender neutral fashion from early on, causing us to question gender and dress from the very beginnings.

We will have two books about Vivienne Westwood available in the shop should you wish to continue learning more about the fashion legend!

Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to seeing you soon!
