🚨 THE PROBLEM

At Southwest Public Schools, nearly 150 out of 800 students cannot clearly see the board in class.

This is not a behavior issue.
This is not a motivation issue.
This is a vision issue.

When kids can’t see the board, learning becomes harder immediately. Confidence drops. Engagement fades. For many families, basic eye care is simply not affordable.

That’s the reality inside these classrooms right now.

πŸ› οΈ WHAT WE ARE DOING

On January 24, Houston Millennials is joining forces with Rotary District 5890 and the Lions Club to host a large-scale, organized vision screening event at Southwest Public Schools.

πŸ‘οΈ Lions Club will conduct professional on-site vision screenings
πŸ“‹ Students who need further care will be identified
🎟️ Follow-up optometrist exams will be handled through a voucher system
πŸ’™ Families pay nothing

This is a focused pilot effort.
Only students from this school will be served at this stage.
Once the process is proven, we expand.

πŸ™Œ WHY WE NEED VOLUNTEERS

This is not a casual volunteer opportunity.

This is a logistics-driven, student-centered operation that requires people who show up on time, follow direction, and stay for the full event.

We are recruiting committed volunteers only to help ensure students move through the process safely, efficiently, and with dignity.

If you want to be part of something real and well-run, we need you.

⚠️ PLEASE READ BEFORE RSVP

This is a working volunteer event, not a symbolic RSVP. Space is intentionally limited and every role matters. If you register, you are committing to show up on time, stay engaged, and serve for the full event. Each RSVP represents one confirmed volunteer, and we require accurate contact information so we can coordinate roles and communicate logistics before and during the event.

This initiative only works if the people who sign up actually show up. We are counting on you.

🧭 VOLUNTEER ROLES MAY INCLUDE

βœ… Student check-in and verification
βœ… Escorting students between screening stations
βœ… Managing student flow and lines
βœ… Supporting Lions screening teams
βœ… General on-site logistics support

Clear instructions and role assignments will be provided on site.

⏱️ VOLUNTEER EXPECTATIONS

πŸ•£ Arrive by 8:30 AM sharp
⏳ Stay through the full event
🀝 Professional and respectful conduct
🏫 Comfortable working in a school environment with students

Please register only if you are committed to attending.

🀝 HOW THIS CAME TOGETHER

This effort began when Dr. James Troutman, a teacher at Southwest Public Schools, spoke up about what students were experiencing in the classroom and brought the concern forward. Through Ivan Sanchez with Houston Millennials, the issue was elevated to the Sharpstown Rotary Club, led by President Karen Blakeman, and then to Rotary District 5890 under District Governor Dr. Tom Kelchner. Rotary then engaged the Lions Club, led by District Governor Mike George, whose organization is globally recognized for vision care and eyeglass manufacturing.

From there, the effort expanded to optometrists, medical professionals, and additional community leaders, taking on a life of its own as more people stepped in to help.

What started with one educator speaking up has become a coordinated community response, all focused on one goal.

Helping kids see the board.

πŸ’₯ WHY THIS MATTERS

Clear vision changes everything.

If you register, we are counting on you.
