3-Hour Workshop

Date: Saturday, March 18, 2023

Time: 10am-1pm

Description: What happens when your favorite item of clothing wears out? Do you throw it out? Here's your chance to save it (and the environment) by learning visible mending. Different from other kinds of mending, visable mending doesn't mask worn out areas, holes, and rips, but decorates and highlights the imperfections with patches, embroidery and weaving. Learn the techniques that will allow you to turn your well-loved favorites into wearable art. Perfect or jeans, sweaters, sox and more. Bring your own distressed old favorite to mend ot use the materials supplied in class to make a patch for later use.

Tuition: $55 + $5 materials fee

Materials: All materials will be provided.

Location: Contemporary Craft (5645 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201)

Cancellations and Refunds: Workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If workshops must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded through Eventbrite, or you may leave your workshop fee in your Contemporary Craft account for future workshops.

Refund Policy: Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three-business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.

About the Artist

Susan Swarthout is a fiber and multi-media artist. Her works have been displayed at exhibitions in the Spinning Plate gallery, at Seton Hall University, Irma Freeman Center for Imagination, and in the Fiber Forward exhibition at the Knit and Crochet Festival in Pittsburgh. Ms. Swarthout is a teaching artist, whose teaching experience with young people and adults includes ProjectArt, Propel Schools, Contemporary Craft, Irma Freeman Center for Imagination, Center for Creative ReUse, and the Cultural Trust of Pittsburgh. In 2015 she served as the Education Coordinator for the ReNew Festival, a celebration of art from recycled materials sponsored by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council. President of the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh from 2014-16, Ms. Swarthout is now the Community Outreach Chair for the Guild.
