Viscera, the Incarnate Polyphony (La Mesa, San Diego)

Vox Obscura explores the origins of sacred music - from ancient chants and hymns to the birth of polyphony - performed by chamber choir, cantors, harp, lute, strings, and featured oktavist Alexander Mayang. This programmatic concert examines the physical relationship between man and creator within the living, breathing landscape of early music. Following its premiere in Orange County and Los Angeles, Vox Obscura brings Viscera to the intimate acoustics of Christ Lutheran Church in La Mesa on July 26. Viscera also serves as the foundation for Vox Obscura's debut album.
Viscera = internal guts
Incarnate = divine made flesh
Polyphony = intricate interplay of voices
Works by Pérotin, Léonin, Machaut, Josquin, and Vox Obscura composers with ancient and medieval music from Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, and Georgian traditions.

About Vox Obscura:
Early Music is not a relic of the past - it’s a living genre. We aim to rediscover its exotic, diverse sounds for a modern audience. Based in Southern California, our programmatic concerts draw from sacred, folk, and art traditions across the centuries. Our programs pair beloved works with rarely performed repertoire, newly transcribed and arranged by our team of composers, alongside original compositions in historical styles. Through all of this, we embrace improvisation and the art of embellishment, allowing the music to breathe and evolve in new ways, each performance shaped with passion. Learn more at Voxobscura.org
