In the TV series Andor, the origin of a recurring line, “rebellions are built on hope”, is introduced, and it becomes a rallying cry through the series and the film Rogue One. It has taken hold, even, in our world, and I see it pop up on social media repeatedly. It focuses our attention on how rebellions are sustained by small acts of courage and bravery. Sometimes that takes the form of peaceful protest or involvement directly in politics, but these acts are also shown when we step away from our fears and recognize the glimmers, the signs, the little things that surprise us that create sustenance when we most need it.
However, fear and anxiety will always make us diminish these tales in our own minds, especially if they represent fleeting moments of hope and peace. We think they aren’t “big” enough to make change once we are dragged back into the chaos again. But I think we have the power to change that, through writing them down as stories.
Every one of us has the power to be a storyteller. To be one, you need a compelling story that not only resonates with you but might just speak to someone else. You also need a few tools to enhance the telling of your story. What I’d like to do in this class is to guide us to recall a few things that have occurred in the past during difficult times or even in the present chaos we live in. By taking the elements of the hopeful glimmer we experienced and crafting them into a short story, using different writing styles, we can universalize our tale, making it shine for ourselves and others.
Please consider the benefit of coming to a class where in a safe environment, you can relate to others your own story of hope, and I’ll show you some ways to write it into a universal myth or tale. Learn how to take yourself “out” of it and instead place a character who represents you. Learn a different mythic point of view from which to tell the tale that gives it a grandiosity and beauty. Learn to be inspired by your own stories, and to craft them in such a way that you may feel compelled to share them.
Please bring pen and paper or a laptop; there will be some time given in class to write a draft and to get feedback from me on the work (and don’t worry, I always give kind and supportive feedback!) Taught by the Series Editor of Tales from Fiddler’s Green.
