Vintage Fountain Pen 101
About this Event
Spend your lunch hour with a table of vintage fountain pens and someone who knows them well. Sara Pierce, who handles fountain pen repair for Oblation, leads this introduction to the pens that came before cartridges and converters became the norm.
We’ll begin with a short history of the fountain pen and what sets vintage pens apart from modern ones. From there, Sara walks through how they actually work: lever fillers, piston fillers and cartridge/converter systems, and how a nib and feed carry ink to the page. Then you’ll write with a range of vintage pens to feel the differences between nibs and filling systems for yourself.
We’ll finish with the practical side. That covers which inks and papers suit older pens, how to clean and care for them, and what to look for (and what to steer clear of) when you buy a vintage pen of your own.
This workshop suits anyone curious about vintage pens, whether you’ve never filled a fountain pen or you’re thinking about your first older one.
No experience or equipment needed.
