ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Merle Porter (1907–1988) was a one-man postcard production company, based out of Colton, California. He produced and distributed millions of cards over a 50-year career. Nearly always about places, his cards celebrated ordinary landscapes, including highways and small town downtowns in the western states—especially California.
The Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), a research organization interested in understanding and exploring the built landscape of the USA, has been collecting (and distributing) postcards made by Merle Porter since the late 1990s.
CLUI program director Aurora Tang will share a selection of Porter’s California postcards, alongside contemporary re-photography of the depicted scenes, taken by the CLUI. Comparing these old postcard views with current views of the same location shows the changes we make to the places we inhabit. Studying them side by side, we span the gap between then and now, and unearth surprising, subtle, and revealing patterns of change and stasis.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Aurora Tang is a curator and researcher based in Los Angeles. She has worked with the Center for Land Use Interpretation since 2009, and currently serves as program director.
Founded in 1994, the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI) is a non-profit research organization dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge about how the nation's lands are apportioned, utilized, and perceived.
CLUI is also the recipient of a grant from the LABC Foundation!
