Peter Erskine az amerikai jazz-dobosok doyenje a Berklee díszdoktora, többszörös Grammy-díjas művész, aki pályája során több mint hétszáz lemezen működött közre, s szinte lehetetlen lenne hiány énlkül felsorolni azokat a világsztárokat, akikkel együtt zenélt. A nagyzenekari hangzás sem áll távol tőle, rendszeresen játszik szimfonikus zenekarokkal; az angol zeneszerző, Mark-Anthony Turnage 2013-ban neki írta Erskine című concertóját.
1972-ben csatlakozott a Stan Kenton Orchestra zenekarhoz.
1981-től – bár még működött a Weather Report is – Pastorius-szal a Word of Mouth big bandben játszott. Ezután a Steps Ahead következett, amellyel egy időben több más big band zenéjén is közreműködött, a Bob Mintzer Big Bandben is, amely a modern big band jazz és funk egyik jelentős képviselője. Innen eredő barátságuk eredményeként ezen a koncerten.

Peter Erskine, the doyen of American jazz drummers, is a Berklee honorary doctorate, a multiple Grammy-winning artist who has contributed to over seven hundred albums throughout his career. It would be nearly impossible to list all the world-renowned stars he has played with. He is also comfortable with the big band sound, regularly performing with symphony orchestras. In 2013, the English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage wrote his concerto titled "Erskine" for him.
Born on June 5, 1954, Erskine, the percussion prodigy, has made a lasting impact not only as a drummer but also as a composer. Besides his permanent bands, he has participated in numerous jazz albums as a studio musician. He has collaborated with significant figures in American jazz and jazz-rock.
He started playing drums at the age of four. He obtained his diploma from the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and then studied percussion at Indiana University. In 1972, he joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra. From 1975 to 1977, he played with Maynard Ferguson, and from 1978, he became the drummer for Weather Report. Alongside the highly regarded bassist Jaco Pastorius, they formed an exceptionally strong rhythm section. From 1979, he was increasingly sought after by other bands as well.
From 1981, while still involved with Weather Report, he played with Pastorius in the Word of Mouth big band. Then came Steps Ahead, with which he simultaneously collaborated on several other big band projects, including the Bob Mintzer Big Band, a significant representative of modern big band jazz and funk. Their friendship led to this concert.
His career as the frontman of the YellowJackets is extraordinary, as he has played with artists such as Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, James Taylor, Art Blakey, Bobby McFerrin, Kurt Elling, Jaco Pastorius, Mike Mainieri, and Randy Brecker. And, of course, we cannot forget about the long-standing Bob Mintzer Big Band!
