Victoria Guitar Society presents Japanese guitar virtuoso Kanahi Yamashita
About this Event
Described as a “master of the new generation”, Japanese classical guitarist Kanahi is celebrated for her controlled technique, fearless musical imagination, and groundbreaking transcriptions. Kanahi performed since childhood with her celebrated father Kazuhito Yamashita and made her solo debut at age 13. The award-winning Kanahi promises a concert of rare brilliance, intensity, and unforgettable artistry.
Born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1997, Kanahi grew up in one of the world’s most celebrated guitar families, studying with her father, legendary guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita, and composer Keiko Fujiie. She began performing internationally at a young age with the Kazuhito Yamashita Family Quintet and later as a duo with her father, making her solo debut in Turin at just 13.
Now based in Berlin, Kanahi has emerged as one of the most exciting guitarists of her generation, performing throughout Europe, Asia, Mexico, and Australia. Recent highlights include appearances with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, and Tokyo Spring Festival. In 2026 she received the prestigious Idemitsu Music Award. An acclaimed chamber musician and arranger, she won the 2025 Gerhard-Vogt Chamber Music Competition with flutist Malin Sieberns. Her recordings include a debut solo album devoted to Carlo Domeniconi, and broadcasts for BR Klassik and NHK-FM. A prizewinner at numerous international competitions, Kanahi has been a D’Addario Artist since 2021.
