Learn the techniques of standup comedians, from structuring a joke on paper to controlling the rhythm and energy of a performance.
About this Event

Dream of being a standup celebrity, wanting to layer your speeches with humor, or just wanting to make your roommates laugh? This is an introductory class where students learn the basics of standup comedy. This means learning performance & stage etiquette, writing structures & techniques, how to turn an idea into a premise, and the in’s and out’s of creating a cohesive standup comedy set. The course concludes with a short performance in front of a live audience at Vancouver's Little Mountain Gallery.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Write jokes using the techniques learned in class
  • Create a 5 minute standup routine and perform in front of a live audience
  • Accept feedback from instructor and classmates to improve performance and polish material
  • Complete in class activities and worksheets
  • Learn stage and comedy etiquette, this includes as a performer and as an audience member
  • Learn how to sequence a comedy set
  • Learn common standup comedy mistakes to avoid
  • Find your unique style, voice, and preferred techniques

Notes:

  • Requirements: Admission Requirements: Students will be 16 years of age or older. The program language of instruction is in English. Participants must be fluent and prepared to study and perform in English. Please bring a pen and notebook.
  • Upon successful completion of a Short-Track course, the cost can be deducted from any full-time Advanced Production program tuition at VFS. Only one discount may be applied. Contact a VFS Advisor for eligibility.
  • Please note that courses may be cancelled at any time due to low enrolment. Upon cancellation, registrants will receive a full refund.
