💚 How can exploring a family archive transform our understanding of the collective present?
"The Past Is Before You" by Montreal-born artist Arnie Lipsey explores this question by considering how memories can be examined, reimagined and even uplifted, shedding new light on the artist’s personal history.
An exercise in catharsis, Lipsey’s paintings forgo linear time, choosing instead to collapse the past, present, and future. Each work begins with an archival family photograph, and branches out into thematic explorations of war, survival, immigration, family life, as well as leisure. Lipsey’s paintings depict everyday Jewish life in Eastern Europe and Montreal from his family’s vantage point, highlighting stories transmitted across generations that are simultaneously loving, comforting, humorous, and haunting.
On June 27, please join us for a celebratory vernissage of "The Past Is Before You." We welcome you to immerse yourselves in the surrealist worlds within Lipsey's vibrant compositions.
Opening remarks from the artist and our curatorial team will take place at 8:00 pm. Complimentary refreshments will be available, and our bar (payable by card only) will be open with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage options. We invite guests to stay later into the evening with live music by our DJ.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
The son of European-Jewish immigrants, Arnie Lipsey was born and raised in Montreal, and is a graduate from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School of Art and Design, majoring in Film Animation. After working for a period in the nascent Israeli animation industry, he relocated to Toronto in 1978 where he had a decades-long career in animation for film and television. Working in the classical mode (as director, animator, designer, and storyboard artist) using pencil and paper, he later made a successful transition to digital technologies. Arnie augmented his commercial work with independent filmmaking, producing two animated shorts that have been screened internationally. In 2018, he returned to his early artistic discipline: painting. He has exhibited and won awards in juried exhibitions and curated group shows in Ontario and Florida, and participated as an arts grants juror in St. Petersburg.

Dans un désir cathartique, les tableaux de Lipsey renoncent au temps linéaire, choisissant plutôt d'effondrer le passé, le présent et l'avenir. Chaque œuvre commence par une photo de famille d'archive et se ramifie en explorations thématiques sur la guerre, la survie, l'immigration, la vie de famille et les loisirs. Les peintures de Lipsey dépeignent la vie juive quotidienne en Europe de l'Est et à Montréal du point de vue de sa famille, mettant en lumière des histoires transmises de génération en génération qui sont à la fois affectueuses, réconfortantes, humoristiques et obsédantes.

Les mots d'ouverture de l'artiste et de notre équipe de commissaires aura lieu à 20h. Des rafraîchissements gratuits seront disponibles et notre bar (payable par carte) sera ouvert avec des boissons alcoolisées et non alcoolisées. Nous invitons les invités à rester plus tard dans la soirée avec de la musique live jouée par notre DJ.

À PROPOS DE L'ARTISTE :
Fils d’immigrants juifs européens, Arnie Lipsey est né à Montréal. Il est d’ailleurs diplômé de l’École des beaux-arts et de design du Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, avec une majeure en cinéma. Après avoir travaillé un temps au sein de l’industrie israélienne naissante d’animation, il s’installe à Toronto en 1978 où il poursuit une longue et fructueuse carrière en animation pour le cinéma et la télévision. À la réalisation, l’animation et la conception, entre autres, de scénarimages, il utilise d’abord le papier et le crayon pour adopter ensuite avec succès les technologies numériques. Parallèlement à son travail professionnel, Lipsey trouve le temps de réaliser et produire deux courts-métrages d’animation qui ont été diffusés partout dans le monde.
En 2018, il revient à la peinture, sa première pratique artistique. Il a exposé dans des expositions-concours, qui lui ont valu des prix, et dans des expositions de groupe en Ontario et en Floride.
Il a participé comme juré à l’attribution de subventions à Saint-Pétersbourg.
