Galerie LJ is pleased to welcome Chinese-American artist Mu Pan for his 4th solo show in Paris. Since his show in Paris in 2019, his very first monograph book was published in October 2020, covering most of his production between 2014 and 2020 (American Fried Rice: The Art of Mu Pan, Abrams, New York).
Over the past two years he briefly tried a more contemplative narrative way of painting, with less movement, although just as dense as usual. But the old demons of war caught up with Mu Pan, who embarks us, for this new exhibition, in fantastic naval battles.
Three new paintings on wooden panel (137 x 91cm) present three different pirate boats, besieged and attacked by multiple aquatic creatures, marine monsters, bandits, pirates, soldiers, yakuzas, ninjas, who are gutting, grabing, beating or eating each other, in a joyous mess where only the mermaids seem to escape the massacre. A fourth painting («Peaches», 127 x 152cm) completes this new body of works, featuring one of Mu Pan’s favorite themes: facetious monkeys in a semi-bucolic, semi-lustful environment, pursuing small plump and juicy peaches…
