𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗯. et 𝗟𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗱𝘂 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿 présentent 𝘼𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙚, première rétrospective en France consacrée aux publications d’𝗘𝗿𝗶𝗸 𝗞𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀. L’exposition réunit près de trois décennies de production éditoriale et rassemble une centaine d’ouvrages, parmi lesquels Incomplete Encyclopedia of Touch et MAN, publiés récemment chez RVB BOOKS.
Artiste, éditeur et figure majeure de la réflexion contemporaine sur la photographie vernaculaire, Erik Kessels s’ attache à révéler la portée narrative, esthétique et anthropologique d’images issues de pratiques amateurs. Collectionneur méthodique, Kessels rassemble des images provenant de ventes aux enchères, d’archives, d’Internet ou de marchés aux puces. En se réappropriant les images contenues dans des albums familiaux, des ensembles collectés ou des fonds anonymes, il en propose une relecture qui renouvelle leur intelligibilité.
son travail explore la façon dont ces photographies, souvent banales en apparence, témoignent de gestes, de rituels et de comportements partagés, inscrits dans l’histoire visuelle des sociétés.
𝘼𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙚 interroge la place des images dans nos sociétés, leur circulation, leur interprétation et le rôle qu’elles jouent dans la construction de nos représentations individuelles et collectives.

agnès b. and La Galerie du Jour present As Far as You Can See, the first retrospective in France devoted to the publications of Erik Kessels. The exhibition brings together nearly three decades of editorial production and features around one hundred books, including Incomplete Encyclopedia of Touch and MAN, recently published by RVB BOOKS.
An artist, publisher, and a major figure in contemporary reflections on vernacular photography, Erik Kessels is dedicated to revealing the narrative, aesthetic, and anthropological significance of images drawn from amateur practices. His work explores how these photographs—often seemingly mundane—bear witness to shared gestures, rituals, and behaviors embedded in the visual history of societies. In doing so, he highlights photographic trends and certain universal behaviors that transcend borders and eras.
First presented in Milan at the Commerce bookshop-gallery, this exhibition, shown here in a substantially expanded version, offers a broad overview of Erik Kessels’s visual, editorial, and photographic research.
The books are accompanied by artworks and installations that extend their themes, inviting the public to explore the complexity and richness of this body of work.
As Far as You Can See examines the place of images in our societies—their circulation, interpretation, and the role they play in shaping our individual and collective representations.
