Verna Mize Triathlon - 6th Annual

Are you looking for a triathlon in a scenic venue?

Well then our Vernamize triathlon is for you!

Now in our 6th year! this triathlon is focused on all levels of competition regardless if you're a long time triathlete or just dipping your toe into the water for the first time. We have three separate races the Mini-mize, the Main-Mize and the Maxi-Mize which allow for level competition for all participants. The race starts off the beach of Kestner park overlooking the famous Portage canal lift bridge and the bike race winds through the hills of Houghton finishing with a run along the canal park.

ENTRY FEE TO BE PAID IN CASH THAT MORNING: $5.00

The race is currently funded privately by the residents of Houghton and all proceeds go to covering the cost of setting up the event with the community.

Mary started this race four years ago to bring awareness to the efforts of Vernamize to save Lake Superior and we race with that goal in mind.

"Verna Mize was a pioneer for Lake Superior in the environmental movement back in 1967. The standard at the time was to dump the shavings of iron ore pellets into the lake with the proposal being, "the solution to pollution is dilution."

She refused this reply and convinced the Federal Government and the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota to bring a lawsuit against the company. The law suit was settled in favor of the people and the companies are now dumping on land effectively saving Lake Superior from certain destruction." Credit to Charles Eshbach for the details. Verna Mize almost single handidly saved Lake Superior from pollution and to honor her efforts we race in and around that same lake.
