Join us for a hands-on Intro to Protactile Workshop, an immersive training designed for the Deaf and DeafBlind community, interpreters, SSPs, and CN (co-navigators) to explore the language and culture of DeafBlind communication. Participants will explore communication through touch, movement, and shared space, learning about backchanneling, co-presence, and environmental facilitation. Through guided demonstrations and small-group tactile exercises, attendees will gain foundational skills in Protactile (PT) language and learn how to foster meaningful connection and access for DeafBlind individuals. Optional 1:1 afternoon sessions with the presenter offer guided hands-on practice in applying these skills in real-world communication settings.
Learning Objectives:
Define and describe the core principles of ProTactile language, including co-presence, contact space, and backchanneling.
Identify the roles and boundaries of interpreters, SSPs, and CN (co-navigators) in supporting effective and autonomous communication for DeafBlind individuals.
Demonstrate basic ProTactile communication techniques in one-on-one and group settings.
Presenter:
Kelly Monahan is a Protactile educator with extensive experience teaching interpreters, support service providers, and co-navigators how to communicate effectively using Protactile language. She brings real-world knowledge from her lived experience and professional background, helping bridge the gap between the DeafBlind community and interpreting professionals. She is passionate about creating access and building deeper connections through touch language.

RID CEU Information:
Vancro Integrated Interpreting Services (VIIS) is an approved RID CMP sponsor for continuing education activities. This workshop is offered for up to 0.35 CEUs in the Professional Studies area at the "little to no" content knowledge level. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
The target audience for this activity is: interpreters, interpreting students, Deaf, DeafBlind, hard of hearing communities and anyone interested in learning more about Protactile communication.
