About this Event

Vermillion: The Absence of Humanity by Kiona Wooton Millirons Opens June 1 at Positive Space Tulsa

“I make art to share my family’s story,” says artist Kiona Wooton Millirons about her upcoming exhibition, Vermillion: The Absence of Humanity, opening June 1 at Positive Space Tulsa. “My sister, Amber, was shot 11 times as she was leaving her job as the branch manager of a library in Sacramento in 2018. Vermillion is an exhibition focusing on my journey through the trial of my sister’s murderer.” Kiona’s work will include paintings and mixed media works depicting elements of the trial and its emotional imprint, along with experimental sound to evoke the “texture of moments in the courtroom.” Altogether, the exhibit is dedicated to victims, survivors, their families and to first responders of gun violence.

About the Artist: Kiona Wooton Millirons is a visual artist and retired teaching artist. She is the founder and former Executive Director of the Oklahoma City Girls Art School. Kiona is a Leadership Arts and Artist Inc. graduate and volunteers throughout the arts community with organizations such as the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. She is passionate about art and its impact on development and positive change.

Vermillion: The Absence of Humanity will open 5-9pm, Saturday, June 1, 2024, with a sound performance by experimental string trio Cheyenne McCoy, Kya Millirons and Chazlen Rock.

The exhibit will conclude on Saturday, June 22, with an Artist’s Talk 1-2pm.

Gallery hours during the exhibit: Thurs, 6-8pm; Fri, 5-9pm; Sat, 12pm-5pm and by appointment.
