Eastern Projects Gallery is pleased to present Velvet Dragons, a solo exhibition by Southern California painter Gregg Stone, curated by artist Man One. Opening on Saturday, August 1, the exhibition brings together a powerful selection of Stone's watercolor paintings alongside works from his personal collection of Chicano Pr*son art, creating a compelling dialogue about dignity, addiction, survival, memory, and the human experience along the U.S.–Mexico border.
For nearly three decades, Stone has documented life along the U.S.–Mexico border through his distinctive realist paintings. Using watercolor, ink, and gouache, he captures the streets, architecture, and people of Tijuana and Northern Mexico with extraordinary detail, color, and emotional depth.
Velvet Dragons explores the lives of women in Tijuana’s Zona Norte, presenting intimate portrayals that challenge stereotypes and reveal dignity, resilience, and humanity within overlooked communities. Alongside Stone’s paintings, the exhibition features selections from his personal collection of Chicano Pr*son art, creating a powerful dialogue between color and black-and-white imagery, reality and fantasy, struggle and survival.
Through these works, Stone invites viewers to reflect on themes of addiction, freedom, identity, memory, and the search for beauty in unexpected places.
