Learn to cook vegetarian Mexican cuisine in this hands-on cooking series at Central Library. Throughout the course of the summer get to know the “three sisters”—corn, beans, and squash—three staples in Mexican cuisine which grow well right here in Iowa.
Chop, mix, and sample several vegetarian recipes that feature each ingredient and take home a recipe card to make again at home!

These ingredients are known by many indigenous cultures as the three sisters to honor the special status of the crops and because they can be grown in symbiosis.
Overview of the series:
June 10--Corn: try fresh tortillas from a local tortilleria and learn what goes into making homemade tortillas, chips, sopes, and gorditas. Plus, you’ll learn how to make roasted tomato salsa for chilaquiles.

July 15--Beans: starting with dried beans, we’ll show you how to integrate beans into your meals and make pico de gallo and enfrijoladas.

August 12--Squash: Learn to make squash blossom quesadillas and delicious zucchini tacos.
