The annual Vanka Block Party celebrates Croatian artist Maxo Vanka and the Millvale spirit with free happenings for all ages around the St. Nicholas Church. This family fun party includes tents in the lot, DJs inside and out, plus food and drinks.
From 2p-4 Mr. CutTime brings his CutTime Simfonica® string quartet to dramatically highlight the famous church murals. These were created around WWII and feature strong subjects besides Christianity; immigration, economics, war, and peace. These are given intermittent context by the docents present, who will give an overview during the musician break.
Mr. CutTime (aka Rick Robinson) is a new arrival to Pittsburgh from Detroit, where he was a member of the Detroit Symphony. Over decades he started two chamber ensembles called CutTime® to share his game-changing symphonic reductions, popular covers, hybrid compositions and a new attitude. Finding their way onto club stages, Rick started the Classical Revolution Detroit chapter 2010-2022.
Now in Pittsburgh he started the OMG Classical series in breweries and a few other weird places. CutTime means symphonies work everywhere now. Rick asks the burning question: What if Mozart and Bach hung out with Joplin and Aerosmith?
Audience get to join the fun on eggshakers during upbeat tunes. Yet given the reverberant acoustics, this concert will feature more slow music than usual. The "Albinoni Adagio" will be a highlight.
