About this Event
The pastel palette of Spring flowers and warm breezes have found us at last! Come enjoy the bursting forth on a forest or wetlands walk - or both!
The full moon of April, called the Pink Moon, will occur on Wednesday, April 1.
The full Pink Moon is so called for the appearance of Wild Pinks, Silene caroliniana, which should be in flower for our May walk.
There should be a good variety of wildflowers to feast our eyes on, including wild pinks and Virginia bluebells, Blue and Yellow violet, Rose geranium, Solomon’s Seal, Spring beauty, as well as the flowering dogwoods, cherries, crabapples, and redbuds. We may see Bloodroot, Dutchman’s breeches and Trout lily in flower too.
Warblers shall arrive warbling as the winter visitors take their leave to breed in more northern climes. Palm warblers will be tail wagging. Tree swallows will be selecting their nesting boxes.
Earth Day (Wednesday, April 22) is so important. It’s a time to remind us that the environment we live in requires a lot of protection. For volunteer opportunities right here at Van Cortlandt Park, contact: [email protected]
Walk meets in the parking lot of the Riverdale Stables.
