Film Synopsis:
It's 1941, just days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) has been transferred (at his own request) to US Army Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. His new commanding officer, Captain Dana Holmes (Philip Ober), has heard that he used to be a champion boxer and wants him to represent the company. Unfortunately, Prewitt (Prew) wants nothing more to do with boxing (preferring instead to play the bugle), so Captain Holmes gets his subordinates to make his life a living hell, hoping to change his mind.
Meanwhile, Captain Holmes’ assistant, Sergeant Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster) begins a clandestine affair with his boss’s wife (Deborah Kerr), who has a long history of looking for love outside her troubled marriage. He also suggests to his boss that he push Prew even harder to convince him to change his mind about boxing. All the NCOs, except Prew’s friend, Private Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra) join in on the hazing.
While on liberty at a gentleman's club in downtown Honululu, Prew meets, and falls for Lorene (Donna Reed), a local dancer and call girl. Prew confides to her that the reason he refuses to box for the company is that he blinded a close friend while sparring. Meanwhile, Private Maggio, who has accompanied Prew to the club encounters Sergeant 'Fatso' Judson (Ernest Borgnine), a crass and racist sergeant at the club. When Maggio complains that Judson's piano playing is interfering with his dancing, the two nearly come to blows.
Later, Maggio ends up in the stockade, which is managed by Sergeant Judson. Judson cruelly abuses Maggio, who ultimately escapes only to die in Prew’s arms.
Prew vows to find and K*ll Judson, which he ultimately does, but not without getting a nasty stab would himself. He goes into hiding at Lorene’s apartment. Meanwhile, the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, nearby Wheeler Air Base, and the Army Barracks at Schofield. Prew attempts to return to base but is mistakenly shot and killed by friendly fire.
In the last scene of the film, Lorene and Karen meet for the first (and only) time on a ship leaving for the mainland. A random conversation reveals their shared history.
