Deze avond wordt gecureerd door niemand minder dan AB’s huisfotografe Daria Miasoedova. Op 15 september geeft ze na twee jaar haar camera door aan een opvolger, en vertrekken doet ze in stijl. Dit muzikale evenement is tevens de aftrap van Daria’s expo: haar foto’s worden in AB opgehangen en blijven daar te zien.
Daria: "It's a really happy moment for me to invite the amazing musicians Emma Hessels and Valentina Magaletti to celebrate my photography exhibition, marking the end of my time as AB’s in-house photographer. To me, their work really captures what AB is all about at heart: enabling artists the freedom to experiment and share their unique musical visions.”
Valentina Magaletti
De Italiaanse drumster/componiste en multi-instrumentaliste Valentina Magaletti heeft een ronduit indrukwekkend CV. Met haar uiterst persoonlijke percussie-aanpak werkte ze veelvuldig samen met wereldnamen als Thurston Moore, Lafawndah, Mica Levi, Kamasi Washington en Nicolas Jaar. Ze opereert onder de noemer Moin, Holy Tongue, Tomaga en Vanishing Twin. Magaletti was zowel in 2017 als eerder dit jaar nog present op BRDCST. Nu komt ze met haar soloproject naar AB club voor een intiem concert.
Als solo-artiest onderzoekt Magaletti vaak textuur. In Batterie Fragile (unjenesaisquoi, 2022) bespeelt de percussioniste een keramisch drumstel dat werd ontworpen door Yves Chaudouët. Magaletti gebruikt draadborstels, houten riet en rubberen kloppers om ongewone geluidskarakteristieken op te roepen uit het porselein. In een soortgelijke geest reflecteert ze op A Queer Anthology of Drums (bié Records, 2022) - oorspronkelijk uitgebracht op Cafe OTO's Takuroku label - over haar queer identiteit, de rituele aspecten van improvisatie en de onderdrukkende realiteit van het leven in een afgesloten ruimte. Ze doet dat door low-fi drones, field recordings en gemoduleerde percussieve objecten samen te smelten. Het resultaat is een melancholische montage met invloeden uit beeldende kunststromingen zoals dadaïsme, surrealisme en Art brut.
“I first fell in love with Valentina Magaletti's music when I heard her album A Queer Anthology of Drums, a brilliant experimental work by a masterful percussionist. Since then, I've seen her perform live several times, notably at AB’s BRDCST festival, where she left us in awe. Having her join us for this event is a wild dream come true!", voegt Dario nog toe.
Emma Hessels
De 23-jarige zangeres Emma Hessels pendelt tussen Antwerpen en Brussel. Gewapend met enkel haar stem en gitaar won ze in 2023 het prestigieuze Sound Track, dé muziekwedstrijd voor aanstormend talent. In haar slaapkamer maakt ze kleine liedjes waarin ze grootse, universele gevoelens zoals liefde en eenzaamheid bezingt. Haar muziek is een zoektocht naar identiteit en erkenning. Dat vertaalt zich in een geheel eigen sound die maar moeilijk in één genre onder te brengen valt. Enkel haar soulvolle stem is de enige – prachtige - constante.
Daria over Emma: “I've had the honour of following a part of Emma Hessels' journey, from capturing her winning moment at the Sound Track finale to shedding a tear through my viewfinder during her first show with Porcelain ID at AB. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Emma”.
