Vijay Kolinjivadi, Aaron Vansintjan, and Eleanor Finley present "The Sustainability Class" and "Practicing Social Ecology"Opinions about environmentalism on the Left are often divided. On the one hand, environmentalism has long been accused of being elitist and exclusive, but on the other, there is an amazing well of untapped power in our communities to build an ecology of solidarity, breaking through class barriers, and strengthening left forces for internationalist solidarity against the war on the planet.
In this double book launch, authors Eleanor Finley (PRACTICING SOCIAL ECOLOGY) and Vijay Kolinjivadi and Aaron Vansintjan (THE SUSTAINABILITY CLASS) will present their books, which discuss these themes from different angles. In THE SUSTAINABILITY CLASS, Kolinjivadi and Vansintjan take well-meaning liberal progressive readers through the traps of elite environmentalism from Los Angeles to Saudi Arabia, showing how any environmentalism based on exclusion makes things worse—like trying to douse a fire with flamethrowers. They look at movements that offer an alternatives to the working class and identify how they do so through imagination, solidarity, and building power. In PRACTICING SOCIAL ECOLOGY, Finley takes readers through her experience of democratic ecology movements from the revolution in Rojava to Barcelona's municipalist movement and beyond, showing how activists use ecological thinking to develop study groups, democratic assemblies, and confederations.
Eleanor Finley is a researcher at the University of Massachusetts, an associate of the Institute for Social Ecology (ISE), and an affiliated researcher at George Mason University, Next System Studies. She has published numerous articles on social ecology and related themes, such as Kurdish democratic confederalism, energy and environmental justice, and degrowth, and conducted dozens of workshops, talks, and lectures to diverse audiences in North America and Europe. The author lives in Fairfax, Virginia.
Vijay Kolinjivadi is an assistant professor at the School for Community and Public Affairs, Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He is also a co-editor of the website Uneven Earth.
