About this Event
Join AIA Milwaukee with our hosts Kahler Slater on a tour of UW-Milwaukee's Chemistry Building. The new 163,400 sf facility will house the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry with learning and research laboratories and will also support and expand offerings for all STEM, health science related majors as well as several engineering programs.

Participants are required to sign a waiver prior to the tour, the tour will begin promptly at 4pm, it is recommended to come at 3:45pm. Please bring a hard hat, safety vest, protective eye wear and closed toed shoes for the tour.
Learning Objectives:
- Gain an understanding of current academic chemistry instructional space design for instructional and research laboratories, lecture halls, classrooms, offices, and collaboration spaces.
- Examine how the design team’s research into the different programs that the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers was used to inform how the building is shaped and how the program elements interact with each other.
- Explore some factors that go into creating a new building on an existing urban campus including infrastructure obstacles.
- Recognize how the creation of a new green campus quad which will invite people to linger and engage with the STEM centered region of campus.
- Observe how programmed spaces throughout the facility were designed to be flexible, to accommodate multiple layouts in the same space, and allow reconfiguration of equipment and furniture.
- Learn about the complexities the design team faced with detailing the undulating façade, including maintenance considerations.
Details:
- Attendees must provide their own hard hat, safety vest, and protective eyewear for the tour. They may have a limited number of extras, but they cannot guarantee it.
- Attendees must wear closed toe footwear.
- All attendees will be required to sign a waiver which can be done on-site the day of the tour. It is recommended that people arrive 15 minutes early so that the tours can begin promptly at 4:00 pm.
- The tours must be completed, and attendees must vacate the site promptly no later than 5:00 pm.
