About this Event
Brendan Cooper, LCSW, has over a decade of experience working with groups and individuals in both community mental health and private practice settings. He utilizes a holistic approach with young adult and adult populations, and training in Schema Therapy has helped him greatly in his work with individuals impacted by addiction and trauma in particular.
Substance use and other addictions are known to have negative effects on health, wellness, functioning and relationships of individuals, and are significantly linked to mental health. Many efforts to treat addiction and dependence do not address underlying issues that may drive these addictive patterns, resulting in cycles of addiction or cross-addiction. The ability to identify maladaptive coping responses and patterns of behavior that are often prevalent to individuals experiencing substance and/or behavioral addictions is fundamental to initiating meaningful change. Schema Therapy has been proven to be an effective treatment for substance use or behavioral addictions. Clinicians will benefit from learning about th application of Schema Therapy in their work with clients who have experienced patterns of addiction.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will increase knowledge of use of schema interventions for individuals with addictions.
- Participants will increase their understanding of how addictive patterns/berhaviors are related to the maladaptive schemas identified in Schema Therapy.
- Participants will increase understanding of how to implement schema treatment interventions (limited reparenting, imagery work, flash cards) in their work with clients.
- Participants will increase their understanding of how to implement other clinical skills and therapeutic interventions in conjunction with schema therapy to improve client treatment outcomes.
