Using Journalistic Skills in Creative Writing

This interactive workshop will explore how the skills learned in journalism school -- constructing stories to inform readers what's happening that also draw them in and get them interested in reading to the end -- can inform the different creative writing genres. Specifically, we will:

• Discuss the tenets of who/what/when/where/why, brevity, the interview, observation and how these elements relate to creative writing.
• Consider the idea of "man bites dog" stories versus "dog bites man," and leveraging real life events to uncover the human story, the human condition, the human truth.
• We'll practice storytelling with a ripped-from-the-headlines writing exercise.
  

Diana Rojas is a former journalist with a degree from New York University. She has worked for The Record, USA Today, Reuters Events and other publications. She lives in Washington, DC. Litany of Saints is her first book.
