Using Hedgerows in your Garden Design

with Nina Shippen

Saturday, September 19 | 10 am - 12 pm

This class looks at how you can transform your property lines from tangles of invasive plants and poison ivy into environmental powerhouses with four season beauty. We will review the historic use of hedgerows and their ecologic value, provide appropriate shrubs and trees that may be used in a variety of growing conditions, and detail the process of planting, building, and maintaining your hedgerow. Our privet hedges that delineate property lines can be interpreted as modern expressions of the hedgerows that people have used throughout history to define property boundaries, enclose livestock, and control erosion.

Nina Shippen practices residential landscape and garden design through her company Hidden Road Landscape Design, which focuses on coupling the principles of healing gardens with sound ecologic practices to create satisfying gardens for her clients. A graduate of the landscape design program at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies, she has lived and gardened in Transylvania County since 2005.
