TOPIC: The goal of this course is to enhance student knowledge and confidence concerning Use of Force issues. The class is designed to help students develop a positive pre-use of force mindset and to look at use of force incidents as the courts do.
The course will include classroom discussion and group study exercises.
Subjects will include:
• Understanding how force is evaluated
• Video analysis
• Use of Force documentation
• Review of Case Laws
• The importance of Articulation
• Investigation of a force incident from a Sergeant’s perspective
INSTRUCTOR: Don Moore is a 37-year veteran police officer in the Saint Louis, Missouri area. He served the Country as a U.S. Marine Military Police Officer in which he was instrumental in designing the MCAS Yuma Special Reaction Team. He received specialized training in anti/counter terrorism operations before transitioning to the civilian sector.
Don graduated at the top of his police academy class and has proudly “served and protected” the local community for over 30 years. He held assignments as a crisis intervention officer/trainer, special reaction team trainer, evidence technician unit coordinator, investigator, field training officer, department training coordinator, CALEA accreditation coordinator, and master level instructor. Don designed and implemented the department’s evidence technician unit and crisis intervention team. He has been a Missouri POST Certified Law Enforcement Trainer in over twenty disciplines since 2003.
Don is a subject matter expert in the psychology and physiology of police use of force. He is certified as de-escalation and implicit bias instructor by the Force Science Institute and L.E.A.D.S (Law Enforcement Active De-escalation Strategies) Program. He has extensive training in human terrain mapping which addresses human behavior factors. He specializes in people skills, technical skills, skill development training, management and leadership, and policy development.
Don created SBCM Consulting Group which provides quality and effective training sessions to the law enforcement, public safety, and corporate sectors.
Don holds a Bachelor of Arts in Management with a minor in criminology, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice (both summa cum laude), and a Graduate Certificate in the Administration of Criminal Justice from Webster University in St. Louis as well as a Graduate Certificate in Forensic Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis.
