Urban Sketchbooking emphasizes storytelling that conveys a sense of place or a moment in time through drawings completed from direct observations.
Bring your supplies (sketchbook or paper, pencil, pen or other materials) and join us outside in downtown Belfast to produce quick sketches of PEOPLE in motion, PLACES found in architecture, Still Life OBJECTS, and PANORAMAS and VISTAS.
Participants will spend some time working independently and then reconvene to talk about what everyone observed and what stories their drawings can tell us.
All ages welcome! Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle. Contact the organizer, Joan Bickelhaupt ([email protected]), with any questions.
Friday July 12 at 10 am: (PEOPLE in motion) Meet at Waterfall Arts during the Art Farmer’s Market (256 High Street, Belfast)
Friday July 19 at 10 am: (PLACES in architecture) Meet at Waterfall Arts during the Farmer’s Market (256 High Street, Belfast)
Friday July 26 at 10 am: (Still Life OBJECTS) Meet at Waterfall Arts during the Farmer’s Market (256 High Street, Belfast)
Sunday July 28 at 1pm: (PANORAMAS and VISTAS) Meet at the gazebo at Steamboat Landing and we’ll walk over to the city dock (34 Commercial Street, Belfast)
About the facilitator: Joan Bickelhaupt is an artist and printmaker living in Arlington, Virginia. She specializes in a variety of relief printing techniques, monoprints using gelatin plates and plastic plate engravings. She currently leads several outdoor sketch groups for art organizations in Virginia and Maine. Additionally, she made new friends with NOVA Plein Air Artists to bring her “Dreamscapes”on the road in 2024. You can follow her on Instagram @joanbickelhaupt to see her work and what’s next!
