About this Event

Anthony Hüseyin presents their latest album, Project O, as part of Urban Resilience at Campus Dammweg.

Anthony Hüseyin is a non-binary singer-songwriter, interdisciplinary performer, and singing teacher, originally from Turkey, with Turkish-Kurdish and Arabic descent. Raised in conservative Urfa in Southeastern Turkey, they studied classical and jazz singing in Istanbul and Rotterdam. Since 2018, they have released three albums (Safran 2012, The Lucky One, 2017, Project O, 2022) and 4 singles. Project O, a concept album recounting their personal and artistic quest as a queer, non-binary musician, was released as a trans-disciplinary performance this month during Queer Week 2022 at Maksim Gorki Theater.

Project O / In the letter «O», which has neither beginning nor end, the line runs in circles and repeats its shape again and again. Anthony Hüseyin to present their new album «O», in which they return to the rediscovery of their gender, their childhood, and their attachment to Zeki Müren, who is considered by many to be the most important queer exponent of Turkish Art (Classical) Music history. Anthony considers Müren as the frst example of a non-binary Turkish artist and a great infuence on their music style. Their album alludes to Müren’s as well as contemporary electro-pop music while referring to the third genderless person pronoun in Turkish called «O», which means «he», «she» and «it» in one word. Thus, their concept album «O» symbolizes Anthony’s personal and artistic quest as a queer, POC, non-binary musician from Turkey. Stylistically, the album O is a combination of contemporary electro-pop music with a pinch of techno-house-nu-disco and the Turkish Art Music (Türk Sanat Müzigi) of Zeki Müren. Anthony in this album approaches to voice as a spectrum as well as their gender and expands the normative gender constructions and thus voice.

Urban Resilience – Bodies
23.09–18.10.2022 / Campus Dammweg

Urban Resilience examines notions of resilience in various contexts and realities.

One’s definition and experience of resilience is informed by, and not limited to, one’s sociocultural background, identity, sentiments of belonging, gender and support systems. The definition of resilience in the West is centered on one’s ability to confront one’s hardships without falling apart, signaling resilience as the ability to prevent or to stop damage, at times reverting back to a place of departure. It is tied to class, education, privilege, identity, gender and economic factors. Whereas, resilience in post-colonial or transnational spaces could mean the ability to cope with pain, trauma, loss, injustice and inequality. It is a fight for survival and healing.

How can we regard resilience as a multitude of intersectional spaces to decompress, heal, defend and empower? What are the tools of defense? Is resilience a strength, a coping mechanism, a strategy of damage-control, a position of privilege or a contingency of knowledge? How does it affect and transform bodies?

Curated by Ali El-Darsa and Anna de Carlo. Coordinated by Berlin Mondiale.
