About this Event
Curious about the plants growing all around you in Oakland? Join us for a hands-on introduction to the ecology of the urban East Bay.
In this interactive workshop, you’ll explore the ecological communities that thrive in everyday spaces—lawns, roadsides, gardens, and even pavement cracks. Together, we’ll walk through Merritt College’s campus to observe, identify, and collect plant samples representing the most common species found in our local environment.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll be able to recognize a few dozen plant species that make up the majority of plant life in Oakland’s urban landscape. You’ll also begin creating your own personalized field guide using the samples you collect, helping you continue your learning long after the workshop ends.
Whether you’re new to plant identification or looking to deepen your connection to the local environment, this workshop will give you practical skills and a new perspective on the living world around you.
What to bring:
- Notebook
- Writing utensil
- Tape (for attaching plant samples)
- Optional (highly recommended): Download the iNaturalist app and create an account
Accessibility:
This workshop will take place entirely on paved sidewalks and footpaths on and around Merritt College campus. No hiking required. We'll meet at the bus stop/main entrance.
