Urban Ecology Center - Washington Park Construction Tour

Join AIA Milwaukee for a tour of the Urban Ecology Center - Washington Park!
The Urban Ecology Center educates and inspires people to understand and value nature as motivation for positive change, neighborhood by neighborhood. The community center provides outdoor science education for urban youth, promotes community by offering resources that support learning, volunteerism, stewardship and recreation, and engages local schools and the community at large through their programming.
Quorum Architects and VJS Construction will lead a guided tour of the new construction and renovation of the existing building. During the tour you will get to see a harvested tree set into place in the 2-story living room in partnership with Whole Trees. Also on the tour, the guides will discuss the addition of bird glass and the importance this had on the design of the building that is adjacent to the park and lagoon.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand balancing various stakeholder and owner interests in a public/private partnership between Milwaukee County Parks and the Urban Ecology Center.
2. Examine the challenges of designing within a 1 story existing building footprint to provide 2 stories worth of additional program space.
3. Identify the complications of, and the approaches to resolve, unforeseen conditions of this site.
4. Understand how sustainability and the overarching design themes were implemented into the vision of the Urban Ecology Center at Washington Park.

Details:

• Please note that the address may be difficult to find in maps: 4023 W Galena St.
  
• Please park in the lot off of N 40th St and W Galena St (Washington Park Pool Building) and walk along the park path to meet at the construction entrance. A map is provided for reference.
  
• The tour will begin promptly at 4:00PM. Please arrive early to walk to the construction entrance to meet an AIA Milwaukee officer for check in.
  
• Please bring all PPE (hard soled shoes, hard hat & safety vest) Limited PPE will be available if needed, this is an active construction site.
