About this Event
Upstart & Crow’s meets every second month to read and discuss works that illuminate the complexity of our shared ecological present. While some are urgent works of non-fiction, and others are novels or hybrid texts, each book is chosen with care for its ability to open new vantage points, challenge easy answers, and — we hope — fuel our collective fight for a liveable future.
Whether you think about climate in your career, are worried about our current moment, or simply want to discover new and unexpected perspectives on how we can reach towards a more sustainable future, this book club is for you.
Each meeting will be facilitated by . Allison (she/her) is a journalist, writer, and filmmaker, based on unceded Coast Salish lands in Vancouver, BC. Her work broadly interrogates the politics and economics of climate solutions.
Join us on Wednesday, December 10 to discuss Lauren Markham’s haunting meditation on language, memory, and the slow violence of climate collapse. Blending reportage, memoir, and speculative inquiry, Markham asks how we might name and mourn what is vanishing — a birdsong no longer heard, a coastline swallowed by the sea, a forest turned ghostly and still. From the solemn walls of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to a repurposed Pr*son in Ljubljana, Markham considers how memorials — both physical and linguistic — can create space for feeling and, perhaps, for action. What if remembrance could be a radical act of imagination? What if grief itself could summon a new vocabulary for hope?
You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options.
