UPCYCLING YOUR GARMS X ARMENIAN EMBROIDERY X LUYS

Upcycling Your Garms is an intimate embroidery workshop centred on slow, hands-on making.

Rooted in traditional Armenian embroidery, this session offers space to step away from constant consumption and reconnect with making something with intention. No pressure, no perfection—just learning, stitching, and thinking together.

Participants are invited to reflect on what it means to refuse, to unlearn, and to choose differently, while creating a personal piece to take home.

The workshop begins with an introduction to Armenian embroidery and its cultural context, followed by a guided stitching session. Using cross-stitch patterns inspired by Taraz and waste canvas, you’ll be able to stitch directly onto your own garments or fabric—working with symbols, words, or patterns that feel meaningful to you.

What to bring

Please bring a pair of tweezers and a garment, fabric, or item you’d like to upcycle and stitch onto.

All other materials will be provided.

Led by Lizzy (https://armenianembroidery.com) in collaboration with Luys Collective.

Lizzy works with traditional Armenian embroidery, exploring storytelling, symbolism, and slow craft practices. Her work centres on reconnecting with cultural knowledge through making and challenging cycles of mass consumption through craft.

Luys is a direct creative action collective founded by 2 armenians who focus on education, creation and direct action. Luys, meaning light, is a space for all people to come together in learning about Armenian culture as well as collective heritage and histories across the global south and majority.

The workshop will take place at SET Social, 55a Nigel Road, SE15 4NP.

SET Social is located in Peckham and is accessible via

– Queens Road Peckham (Overground & National Rail) – short walk

– Peckham Rye (Overground & National Rail) – approx. 10–15 min walk

– Local bus routes serving the area

The space is on street level with step-free access where possible; there are 3 steps into the venue, but a ramp is provided.
