Join us Thursday, July 30, at 6 pm, for an evening featuring award-winning folk musician Carolyn Shapiro (Skidmore class of ’15), who was named the Folk/Traditional Artist of 2026 by the Capital Region Eddie Awards. Shapiro and her band return to the Tang after their debut Upbeat on the Roof performance in 2022. The performance takes place on the lawn outside the Tang. Bring picnic blankets, camping chairs, and your own food and drink to make it a night! Kids can get craft kits from Tang Art Educators at every concert starting at 5:30.
Carolyn Shapiro is an old-time banjo player and songwriter from the Southern Adirondacks whose music feeds the soul like a home-cooked meal. Blending a soulful, contemporary edge with deep-rooted traditional style, her songwriting pushes the boundaries of the banjo and explores the intimate complexities of being human. As a performer, Carolyn uses her music as a tool for connection, education, and inspiration. She brings a joyous vulnerability to the stage, leaving audiences feeling genuinely restored. Though originally on the path to law school, Carolyn’s trajectory changed the moment she picked up a banjo at Skidmore College. She found her voice while working at Caffè Lena, honing her craft at their weekly open mics before emerging as a standout in the folk scene. Since then, she has released two EPs and was named Folk Artist of the Year for the New York Capital Region in both 2022 and 2026. Her highly anticipated first full-length studio album is set for release this fall.
About Upbeat on the Roof
Upbeat on the Roof is the Tang Museum’s a free, outdoor summer concert series on the grounds of the museum. The series highlights regional musical talent in an array of styles. Concerts take place on the lawn outside the Tang (we outgrew the roof!) every Thursday evening from July 9 through August 20 at 6 pm, and are free and open to the public. Visitors are invited to bring blankets, camping chairs, and their own food and drink!
Crafts on the Grass
Tang Art Educators offer crafts for kids at every concert, starting at 5:30! A different craft will be available each week. All projects are suitable for children aged 5 and up, with adult supervision recommended. Materials will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
