Up Until Now - Catherine Hickson - Artist StatementThis exhibition is a retrospective of works made over the past 10 years.
"As a visual artist I am passionate about the power of art to engage audiences through aesthetic appreciation, sharing important stories through visual narrative and real time connection and conversation with diverse audiences.
My painting process begins when I feel compelled by objects, colours or landscape. Sometimes this compulsion extends to a body of work as my curiosity explores different resolutions of visual expression. At other times it rests in a single painting.
I generally start with sketches and detailed drawings before moving into paint.
I really like the physical action of putting paint onto canvas using either a brush, palette knife, or my hands. After time I move into flow where I abandon ideas, concepts and plans and simply respond to what the painting needs."

‘I’m a collector of ‘things’. The work in this exhibition is made up of work produced in the last three years. In my art practise, I work mostly with readymade, mass produced, domestic or industrial bits and pieces. These could be for example vintage hair accessories, bra inserts, vegetable packaging nets, bicycle inner tubes, shoelaces or 2- dollar shop finds. While I like to be open ended about the materials I use, it is rubber, plastic, foam, silicon, latex and natural gut used for sausage casing which are the ‘stuff’ of which I’m particularly attracted to.
My process of creating sculptural forms involves play, grouping and placing. Sometimes the work maybe pulled to pieces to be reused and reconfigured. In my art practice, I very rarely know at the start what form a work will become. I typically work in series or multiples. Touch can be important to many of my works as well. My work is for interior spaces – positioned on the wall, shelves, floor, or ceiling.
Come along and see this unique and vibrant exhibition at our one of kind industrial space in Islington.
Thank you
