About this Event

Up North, Down South (July Edition) - presented by Creative Minds

Date and time: Friday 26 July, 6.15pm-10.00pm

Location: Crossley Gallery, D Mill Reception, Dean Clough Mills, Halifax HX3 5AX

Screenings: 'Lavender' / 'Taxi' / followed by Q&A followed by 'Absolutely Marvellous'

Supported by Creative Minds - a charity hosted by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust - BU Film Fest CIC will screen 2 short films (with an emphasis on mental health) followed by a short discussion about the issues raised.

Selected titles include:

'Lavender' (UK, 27 mins) - an emotional drama short film that delves into the memories of a person living with dementia, built around an interpretation of some of the difficulties they may face (directed by Andrew Ball-Shaw).

The story centers around the relationship between two characters, Fern, who is the mother, and Violet, the daughter. The focus becomes more and more on Fern and how life is for her, living with dementia, whilst also giving insight into its effect on those around her.

'Taxi' (UK, 24 mins) is a gentle, funny and touching insight into the lives of a group of people we often take for granted (directed by Geoff Brokate). Over the course of 12 months Geoff met up with and made links with two groups of drivers working in the Upper Calder Valley. Geoff spent time on the ranks and shadowing drivers from the  communities (White British and Pakistani respectively) as they went on their daily routes … eavesdropping on the stories and conversations that filled the cabs on a daily basis.

This will be followed by the headline feature film Absolutely Marvellous (directed by Emmanuel Anyiam-Osigwe), a fly-on-the-wall boxing documentary which centres around a visually impaired mother and her day-to-day life.

Absolutely Marvellous (Director: Emmanuel Anyiam-Osigwe)
UK, 84 mins

Synopsis: Marvel Opara is the eccentric and partially sighted mother of heavyweight boxing champion Joe Joyce; the film follows her and her family over several months. As with most other fly-on-the-wall documentaries, our fascination doesn’t really lie in the action or events but stems from that more basic animal instinct – curiosity, the desire to take a look behind somebody else’s closed doors, to see how celebrities and their loved ones live.

Do they eat the same things we do? Do they all argue like we do? And, more specifically in this case, what’s it like living with a disability that doesn’t allow you to see your world-famous son box in the ring?

Get tickets from £5 per person (2-for-1 tickets are on sale too).

Free tickets are available to people who use South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust services, carers, unemployed and local (Halifax) residents.
